About the Training Courses : for Specialist Teachers

How does Elklan work?

Elklan has written a range of courses to enable those working with children aged between 2-16 years to be more effective in developing the children’s speech, language and communication skills. We train local Specialist Teachers to become Elklan co-tutors working with Speech and Language Therapists to deliver the programmes in their locality.

Speech and Language therapists take the lead in running the programme but the teacher is a full partner and works collaboratively at all times. Once trained you can offer in conjunction with the SLT any of the following courses:

You can also offer the following specialist courses:

You can also offer the following courses designed for parents, carers, or those in school or early years settings who don’t wish to complete a core course:

Becoming an Elklan co-tutor

To become an Elklan co-tutor you need to attend one of our Total Training Package courses which are held in London, Salford and Northern Ireland every year. Click to see a list of current courses

Once you have trained on an Elklan course you can deliver the full range of Elklan courses in collaboration with an Elklan Tutor. You do not need to attend another Elklan Total Training Package Course.

On-going support

Once you become an Elklan tutor you enter into a large network of others who are all seeking to fulfil the same aims as you in meeting the needs of children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). You will receive ongoing support and advice from Liz and Henrietta and you will be invited to attend annual meetings held in Salford, London and Northern Ireland which are offered free of charge.

Teachers becoming Tutors

Some teachers working with children with SLCN are highly specialist and are able to become Elklan tutors and teach the courses on their own. Click on the links for more information and for a printable application form
