Implementing Elklan - a teachers view

Monday, July 07, 2014

My role in school is quite specialized, I work with children from FS2 to Year 2, supporting them with Speech and Language and other aspects of Literacy. Most of my work is based round small groups of targeted children, who are withdrawn from the class environment for short periods of time to work on their specific needs. My role has evolved over the last 6 years, when I moved from full-time class teacher to part time SEN support and now general Literacy support. Although, my position changed i had no specific training (until now) to compliment this so all my knowledge has been self-taught. For my personal development, this course has given me an excellent background in understanding language and possible barriers for children, some of which i had never heard of e.g. Blank and others where i had misconceptions, e.g. ICWs. I feel confident to write reports for referrals and explain issues to parents. ..

This is good news for all but challenging none the less. ..

Friday, April 04, 2014

I have never felt so emotional about Elklan as I did last Wednesday at the Elklan meeting of tutors and co-tutors in Salford. Those who attended were treated to amazing presentations from two schools who talked to us about the impact of the Communication Friendly Schools (CFS) programme on the children's academic progress and behaviour and staff confidence and skills. Riverside Primary School, Salford and Ladywood Special School, Bolton, awed us all by their commitment and enthusiasm in supporting the development of communication throughout their schools. ..

New publication: Language Builders for 0-3

Wednesday, July 03, 2013

There has been a great deal of press coverage recently about the book Small Talk, by British speech therapist Nicola Lathey and journalist Tracey Blake, which suggests parents should start having back-and-forth "conversations" with babies from the age of 4 weeks. However, professionals might want to look at the latest Elklan book, ‘Language Builders for 0-3’. ..
