As we know the reformed Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, became effective in September 2012. it puts a strong focus on Communication and Language as one of “three prime areas of learning most essential for children’s readiness for future learning and healthy development.”  (Department of Education, 2012). Within the framework, it states that: “Practitioners working with the youngest children are expected to focus strongly on the three prime areas, which are the basis for successful learning in the other four specific areas.”  (Statutory Framework for the EYFS, p.6, 1.7) and “Communication and language development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.”  (Statutory Framework for the EYFS, p.5, 1.6) ..

The Communication Friendly School accreditation is proving to be invaluable for creating a better environment for the development of children's speech, language and communication. 

The feedback Elklan are receiving shows that schools feel that this is 'absolutely worthwhile'. Many teachers have reported that they can use the techniques and strategies with all children while others feel it's helping to make sense of the children who have difficulties in this area. 

Whole school may mean to some, that all the teaching staff are confident but it is also applicable to non-teaching staff such as lunchtime supervisors. Here is one comment we received from staff at a school in Crewe: ..
